Over the past 5 months, three days a week, I have been the YOURGB intern as part of my events and human resources management degree! I had acquired a lot of theory over the past two and half years at university and it only took me a day to realise how quickly I would be able to match it with practice and on-site experience with the help of the YOURGB team.
It would make it so much easier to be able to describe a typical day as an intern with a routine, but let’s be honest, working in events just doesn’t allow that. Initially, I would be supporting the team with different tasks varying from administrative to creative assignments. Then, as I settled into the team and improved my skills, I was given more responsibility – not just in the office but also on-site – which I appreciated as I felt like I learned so much in such a short period of time.
From designing logos and table plans, to researching hotels and event props, no task was too big or too small. Further into my internship, I was given the opportunity to run the YOURGB social media accounts, this appealed to my creative side and I loved seeing the tangible results from my posts through the likes and follows.
What I enjoyed the most about being a part of the YOURGB team is that although each event manager is assigned to their respective projects, the whole team is involved in the initial brainstorming process and the different sections of planning. This means that everyone has a part to play and the whole team takes pride in making a project so successful. Everyone works as a team; this not only helps with morale, but you also know that you’ll never be left on your own.
Doing this internship and being part of so many unique events has given me a better understanding of which events I’d like to work on and learn to design and deliver. Concept design and brand immersive events really appeal to my creative nature. This internship also allowed me to further develop my organisation and strategic skills, while adapting myself to the office and on-site life.
YOURGB puts its team wellbeing at the heart of everything, whether it is through weekly yoga sessions, regular encouragement and acknowledgment for good work or through the occasional team treat (usually involving plenty of snacks!).
To sum up 5 months at YOURGB isn’t an easy task; I would say that I have loved working in an office with a team where you can be honest, productive and have a laugh at the same time. But most importantly, I love how caring each and every one of the team is, both inside and outside of the office. Time has flown by during the past 5 months and I am so grateful to be continuing on as part of the YOURGB team in the role of Event Assistant alongside finishing my last year of university.
